2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe vs Wrangler Unlimited
Posted on April 26, 2021
The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe is the company's first step in a multi-billion dollar project to switch their entire range to electric or hybrid technology over the coming years. The new model has already made quite a splash, but how does it compare to its older siblings? Find out in our 2021 Jeep Wrangler review which pits the 4xe against the Wrangler Unlimited.
Powertrain and Performance
The Unlimited is one of the more powerful models in the Wrangler range, with a powertrain designed for both off-road adventuring and urban efficiency. Built around a 3.6L V6 gas engine feeding all-wheel drive through either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, the Unlimited makes a healthy 285 horsepower and 260lb-ft of torque.
Under normal circumstances, this would make Unlimited a winner, but the 4xe takes powertrain tech to the next level. A 2.0L turbo-4 gas engine is paired with dual electric motors and a 17.3kWh lithium-ion battery pack, making a total output of 375 horsepower and 470lb-ft. These are impressive figures by any standard, but when they're backed by an electric-only range of 40km and combined fuel economy of 4.7L / 100km, they're truly outstanding.
Minor Size Differences
Both the 4xe and the Unlimited are built around the four-door Wrangler body, and look all but identical at first glance. However, the 4xe is slightly wider at the front and rear, with a measurement of 163.5cm compared to the Unlimited at 159.8cm.
The 4xe also stands a little higher off the ground, with a clearance of 25.7cm compared to Unlimited's 24.6cm. These small changes make a big difference to the 4xe's stability and off-road prowess, and when combined with the instant torque availability, the 4xe is a clear winner on the trail.
Infotainment Technology
Both models have a good selection of interior technology, although the 4xe includes more as standard. Features such as smartphone integration, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a premium sound system are fitted to the 4xe by default but are optional extras in the Unlimited. However, the lower list price of Unlimited means it can be brought up to the same level as the 4xe relatively easily.
2021 Wrangler 4xe vs Unlimited Review: The Verdict
The Unlimited is one of the most attractive models in the Wrangler range, but in nearly every respect it's outshone by the all-new 4xe hybrid. If you're looking for serious off-road power combined with the benefits of hybrid technology, the 2021 Wrangler 4xe makes an unbeatable choice.
